The Oakland-based Hieroglyphics are an underground hip-hop collective whose members include: Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Casual, Pep Love, Souls of Mischief, and producer/manager Domino. As a collective, Hieroglyphics has released two studio albums: 1998’s classic debut 3rd Eye Vision, and 2003’s follow-up Full Circle. And, they have released five compilation albums: 1997’s Hieroglyphics B-Sides and Hieroglyphics Oldies, Vol. 1, 1998’s Hieroglyphics Oldies, Vol. 2, 2005’s The Corner, and 2007’s Over Time. The Hieroglyphics are an example of independent hip-hop at its finest: they have put out all of their records independently on their Hiero Emporium label and they founded their own website back in 1995 and made a fan from Philadelphia the site’s webmaster. The site has gone on to win numerous awards and has received high praises and press. Still based in Oakland, the Hieroglyphics have a cult-like following around the world and have remained relevant by continuing to tour and put out new records. |
