In late 2001, Bubba Sparxxx came out of nowhere and emerged with a record produced by Timbaland that went on to be a major hit. His first single “Ugly” was an instant hit on MTV, BET, and mainstream radio. The hip-hop community was dumbfounded that the artist known as Bubba Sparxxx took on a very un-stereotypical hip-hop role: he was white and from the South. The video for “Ugly” communicated his rural, white, country-boy background. He seemed to be the antithesis of what a rapper was supposed to be, and similar to the overnight success of previous white rappers, Sparxxx was suddenly more than an anomaly, he was a bona fide superstar. Sparxx has released three studio albums and has been as high as number three on the Billboard chart with the re-released version of his debut album, Dark Days, Bright Nights. |
